R32 Refrigerant: What Homeowners Need to Know About Handling and the Law

R32 is in almost every new split system — and it's illegal to handle without certification. Here's what's safe to DIY and what must be left to an F-Gas engineer.

Why R32 replaced older refrigerants

R32 is now the standard refrigerant in new domestic split systems from Samsung, Toshiba, LG and others because it has roughly one-third the global warming potential of the R410A it replaced, and units charged with R32 are typically more energy efficient. If you're buying a new air conditioner today, it's almost certainly R32.

R32 is mildly flammable — and regulated

R32 is classified A2L: low toxicity, mildly flammable. In normal use inside a sealed, correctly installed system it is safe. The risk arises during installation and servicing, when the refrigerant circuit is opened.

Because it is a fluorinated greenhouse gas, UK and EU F-Gas regulations make it illegal for anyone without an F-Gas certificate to intentionally handle the refrigerant circuit — that includes cutting into pipework, charging, recovering or topping up refrigerant, and deliberately venting it.

What a competent DIYer can and can't do

Commonly DIY-legal: mounting the indoor and outdoor units, drilling the wall hole, and running the insulated pipe kit and interconnecting cable between the units.

Must be done by an F-Gas certified engineer: flaring or brazing pipe connections that open the refrigerant circuit (practices vary — many installers prefer to make all connections themselves), pressure/leak testing, vacuuming the lines, releasing the pre-charged refrigerant, charging or topping up, and commissioning. In practice most suppliers and installers recommend the engineer makes the final connections and commissions the system — it also protects your warranty.

Leaks and end of life

If you suspect a leak (hissing, oil residue on joints, falling performance), switch the unit off and ventilate the room — don't investigate the pipework yourself. At end of life, refrigerant must be recovered by a certified engineer and the unit disposed of as WEEE waste; it cannot go in general household waste.

Buy the unit, plan the layout, even run the pipes if you're handy — but the moment the refrigerant circuit is involved, use an F-Gas certified engineer.
