For a single split system, the indoor/outdoor unit itself is frequently the smaller part of the bill. Labour, refrigerant pipe work, electrical supply, condensate drainage and making good all add up. Quotes for the same unit can differ widely between installers, which is why an itemised quote matters.

What drives the price

Pipe run length: a back-to-back installation (indoor unit directly behind the outdoor unit on the same wall) is the cheapest scenario. Every extra metre of insulated copper pipe, cable and trunking adds material and labour, and very long runs may need a refrigerant top-up.

Electrical supply: most domestic splits need a dedicated circuit from the consumer unit with an isolator. A long or awkward cable route back to the fuse board adds cost.

Access: ground-floor outdoor units on brackets are straightforward. First-floor or roof installations may need scaffolding or a tower, which can be a significant extra.

Condensate drain: in cooling mode the indoor unit produces water that must drain away. A gravity drain outside is simple; a condensate pump adds parts and cost.

Number of rooms: multi-split systems (one outdoor unit, several indoor units) cost more than a single split but usually less than several independent systems.

What a proper quote should include

A good quote itemises the unit and pipe kit, pipe run length, electrical work, wall brackets or ground stand, condensate solution, refrigerant handling by an F-Gas certified engineer, commissioning and pressure testing, and making good any holes. If a quote is a single number with no breakdown, ask for one.

Ways to keep costs down

Plan for a back-to-back layout where possible, choose the outdoor unit position before the installer arrives, and combine jobs — having pipe routes and electrics done in one visit is cheaper than two. Buying the unit and pipe kit yourself and paying an engineer for a fit-only installation is also common; just confirm the installer is happy to commission customer-supplied equipment before you buy.
